How to Install the Local APK File Manually on Kindle Fire Tablet?

This article is for a friend of mine. I do not have a Amazon Kindle Fire Tablet, because in China, there are too many other better choices for me. So I searched some blogs and refer to some pictures from them, many thanks. Just hope this article is easier to understand for some friends who are looking for.

As we known, the Kindle Fire Tablet do not have the Google Play Store, and it is only allowed to installed the app from Amazon app market. However we can download app apk files from some trusted source and manually installing them. Just be noticed that the manually install the local apps will lose automatic update because it not come from Amazon’s App market and not like other Android device apps directly from Google Play Store. It’s suitable for some games and infrequently updated apps.

Here is the Kindle Fire HDX for tutorial, for the settings, other Kindle Fire lineup products may be in in different (but similar) locations.


1.Make the Kindle fire to accept these apps that not from Amazon market. Swipe down the top navigation bar and click on Settings. In the Settings menu look for the Applications menu, enter it.

Here,  you’ll find the Unknown Sources toggle, enable it to ON, which means the Kindle Fire allow apps from unknown sources, like our local apk files. (this is important step)

We also recommend that turning it OFF after we install apps manually, in order to increase security and prevent some accidental installation that we do not know.

  1. Open the Apps for Android to search the ES File Explorer ( it’s well supported for Android system and popuar), and here it’s free.

  1. Create a folder in the root of the Kindle Fire internal storage. Open the ES file explorer and tapping the New button at the bottom to create a new folder. OR connect the Kindle Fire to our PC or laptops via a USB cable and create the new folder. You should create the new folder like following picture, this folder is going to used for the local APK files.

  1. Download the app you want from some trusted site such as Google Play Store, recommend this Tool OR this tool to download the APK file from Google Play Store (Search the app on Google Play and copy the URL address then paste on this tool site to generate the download link).
  2. Copy the APK file to /Sideloaded Apps/ folder and run ES file explorer on Kindle Fire. Navigate to /Sideloaded Apps/, you will find the APP file, click to the Android installation process.

Navigate to /Sideloaded Apps/ and you’ll see your APK file. Click on it and it will launch into a typically Android installation process as following picture. Please read the permissions and other information before you install it. If you think everything is OK, please install it and the app will appear.


That’s it! Your app is now installed on your Kindle Fire, this method is for installing our local app apk file, hope it’s useful for you.
